Conversations: Budget Town Hall Meetings
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada will host a series of Town Hall meetings on the proposed 2017-2018 budget beginning March 17, 2017. The Superintendent will speak briefly about the budget, and then respond to questions.

Graduation Rate Up. Again.
The District’s graduation rate increased to 82% for students who first entered 9th grade in 2012, outperforming the Big Five school districts, and the dropout rate was cut in half to 2%, below the state average of 6%.

All are welcome to Yonkers Board of Education meetings! The Trustees busy schedule includes working meetings of the Facilities, Audit, Budget and Finance, Instructional Affairs, and Policy committees, and the monthly Stated meeting when community input is welcome.

College-Bound Gorton Seniors take FLIGHT - Graduate a Semester Early
With sufficient credits under their belts, a fabulous group of Gorton High School students are off and running to college a semester early thanks to their participation in the FLIGHT program (Future Leaders Inspired and Getting a Head Start on Tomorrow).

Call for Nominations: Teacher of the Year
The Yonkers Kiwanis Club in collaboration with the City of Yonkers and Yonkers Board of Education will present the 2017 Teacher of the Year Awards to three deserving members of the Yonkers Public Schools faculty. Teachers will be selected based on nominations submitted by students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poem/Video Contest Underway
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin Quezada today launch the 2017 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poem/Video contest. This year’s theme is Challenging Yourself & Those Around You and asks Yonkers students to reflect on what they can do for themselves and their peers to reach their full potential.

City of Yonkers, Yonkers Board of Education & Yonkers Federation of Teachers Settle Contract
All parties have signed a memorandum of agreement between the Yonkers Board of Education and the Yonkers Federation of Teachers. The contract will be before the YFT membership for ratification next week when the staff returns from holiday recess.

Varsity Swim Returns!
After six years without funding for a varsity swim team, the Yonkers Public Schools hosted its first Varsity Swim Meet against Port Chester High School.

Mayor Appoints Mr. Cacace to Board of Education
Mayor Mike Spano appointed Kevin Cacace to serve as a Trustee of the Yonkers Board of Education, filling a vacant seat. Mr. Cacace, currently serves as president of the Yonkers Chamber of Commerce.

In Observance of Veterans/Armistice Day
Yonkers Public Schools is closed Friday, November 11, 2016 in observance of Veterans Day. It coincides with Armistice Day, a commemoration marking the signing of the Armistice on November 11, 1918 that ended the World War. Veterans Day honors service members of all wars.

15 Years On: September 11 Commemoration
Our oldest students were toddlers on September 11, 2001. Today, as young adults, they stood with the Yonkers Public Schools community to remember and honor victims and survivors, those who served in response to the attacks, and the resolve of our country.
