  • Of the People: Students' Reverence of the Past Offers Glimpse of the Future

    Observing a cherished tradition, Yonkers middle and high school students recited Lincoln's Address on The Battlefield of Gettysburg during the Mayor's Annual Memorial Day Oratorical Contest.

    Spearheaded by the Central Committee of Veterans, the contest demonstrates the enduring power of words.

    Twenty students from 19 schools participated. Congratulations to all. The winners are:

    Senior Division

    First place: Jonathan Guerrido, grade 12, Roosevelt High School

    Runners up: Brian Garcia Hernandez, grade 12, Lincoln

    Juan Ruiz, grade 12, Yonkers Montessori Academy

    Junior Division

    First place: Ariel Pennington-Reyes, grade 8, Pearls

    Runners up: Sade Javier, grade 8, Gibran

    Mikayla Teixeira, 8, grade School 13
