Message from Dr. Luis Rodríguez, Interim Superintendent
Dear Parent/Guardian,
I am thrilled to share with you an extraordinary learning opportunity that will occur on April 8, 2024 - a total solar eclipse. This event is truly rare. The next similar event is not due to occur for many decades. Therefore, the eclipse offers a very valuable learning experience for our students. The eclipse will begin at 2:10 PM, with the maximum eclipse visible at 3:25 PM. The total event is scheduled to conclude by 4:36 PM. New York is privileged to be within the path of totality, meaning that we will have a front-row seat to this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.
Understanding the Eclipse
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the sun and earth, thus completely obscuring the sun. This alignment will cause the sky to darken significantly, mimicking the conditions of dawn or dusk.
Safe Viewing Practices
Safety is the District's top priority. It is essential to use specialized solar eclipse eye wear for viewing. Looking at the sun without protective eyewear can cause severe/permanent eye damage. The District will provide students with protective glasses, along with guidelines on safe viewing practices. Attached please find a safe viewing practices sheet, for your information.
Educational Integration
Our teachers will have age-appropriate lessons to help students understand and appreciate the significance of this event. Through these activities, students will explore various aspects of astronomy and the science behind eclipses. This will enrich their learning experience.
We encourage you to engage with your children on this topic. Foster their curiosity and understanding of this remarkable celestial event. This is a wonderful opportunity to inspire a love for science and the mysteries of our universe.
Athletics
Please note that schools hosting athletic events on April 8th will be on a slightly revised schedule. Students will not be permitted on the fields for practice/warm-ups until 4:30 pm, and games will begin at 5:00 pm.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your child's school. Let us embrace this occasion as a community, ensuring a safe and educational experience for all involved.
As always, I thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Luis Rodríguez

Mensaje del Dr. Luis Rodríguez, Superintendente Interina
Estimado Padre /Tutor,
