Update for the YPS Learning Community: Seismic Event of April 5, 2024

  • Message to Parents/Guardians from Dr. Luis Rodriguez, Interim Superintendent of Schools

(April 5, 2024) Our area experienced a seismic event. According to reports, Yonkers and the surrounding regions were affected by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, with reports indicating that the epicenter was located in Lebanon, New Jersey. While earthquakes are relatively uncommon in our region, it is important that we remain vigilant and prepared for any such occurrences.

We are working closely with the City of Yonkers to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, staff, and faculty. Our Facilities Department has confirmed that, based on visual inspections, all our school buildings retain structural integrity, there are no leaks, breaches etc., and all requisite systems are fully online.

As of now, there have been no reports of structural damage or personal injuries within our school premises. Based on these assessments, we are confident that it is safe to resume normal school operations. Therefore, please be informed that school will proceed according to the regular schedule.

Again, there is no cause for undue alarm. However, if you have any concerns or inquiries, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s school. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority, and we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure their well-being.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in response to this situation.
