Conference of Big 5 School Districts Appoints Yonkers Board of Education President Rev. Steve Lopez Vice-Chairperson
In a media release from the Conference of Big 5 School Districts Reverend Steve Lopez, President of Yonkers Board of Education, was appointed to serve as Vice-Chairperson. His leadership term is effective July 1, 2020.

Mayor Spano Appoints Lakisha Collins-Bellamy, Esq. to Yonkers BOE
Mayor Mike Spano appointed Lakisha Collins-Bellamy, Esq. to serve a five-year term as a Trustee of the Yonkers Board of Education on Tuesday, June 30, 2020. She succeeds Dr. Edward Fergus, who was filling the unexpired term of former Trustee Edgar Santana.

Yonkers Public Schools 2019-2020 Administrator and Teachers of the Year
Yonkers Middle High School Principal Jade Sharp receives the Leadership in Education Award, while Montessori School 31 primary teacher Maureen Corrigan-Connell, Yonkers Middle High School grade 8 Social Studies teacher Beth Isenberg, and Roosevelt High School – Early College Studies Spanish teacher Dr. Ida D’Ugo are the 65th Annual Teachers of the Year.

Trustees Unanimously Elect Rev. Lopez & Ms. Ramos Meier to Lead Board of Education
At the 139th Annual Meeting of the Yonkers Board of Education, held by video conferencing because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trustees re-elected Rev. Steve Lopez and Ms. Judith Ramos Meier to serve as president and vice-president respectively. Both will serve one-year terms in their leadership posts.

Schools Closed For Rest of Academic Year - Distance Teaching & Learning Continue
(May 1, 2020) Per Governor Cuomo: All schools in New York State will remain CLOSED for the rest of the academic year. Yonkers Public Schools will continue distance teaching and learning.

Board of Education Adopts COVID-19 Grading Systems Protocol
The Trustees of the Yonkers Board of Education approved suspending the implementation of Board Policy 4710, Grading Systems, and adopted the COVID-19 Grading Systems Protocol.

BOE to Hold Special Meeting via Zoom Video Conferencing
In adherence with social distancing requirements, the Board of Education will hold a Special Meeting to discuss extending the COVID-19 Emergency Agreements with bargaining units and any other business brought before the Board at 4PM Thursday, April 2, 2020 via Zoom video conference.

Spring Break Canceled. Distance Learning & More Continue.
The Governor’s Executive Order requires all schools in the state to remain closed until April 15, 2020, at least. It also requires Districts to continue distance learning, meals, and childcare during any remaining vacation or snow days, including the upcoming Spring Recess.

All Yonkers Public Schools will remain closed through Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Schools are expected to reopen on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 with the understanding that schools may have to remain closed.

There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in our schools, but the District is preparing for a prolonged closure. Schools will be closed for students on Friday, March 13 for Superintendent’s Conference Day.

Yonkers Public Schools Emergency Continuity Plans
While there are no confirmed cases of Coronavirus Disease in our schools at this time, we must be prepared. The Yonkers Public Schools Emergency Health and Facilities Management Plan is being supplemented by a Contingency Instructional Plan that will provide students with 14 days of lessons for every grade level.

BOE Adopts Five-Year Contract for Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada
At the February 26, 2020 Stated Meeting of the Yonkers Board of Education, the Trustees unanimously adopted Resolution 10.8 appointing Dr. Edwin M. Quezada to a new five year term as superintendent of schools. The new contract commences February 1, 2020 through January 31, 2025.

Superintendent Provides State Legislators With Solutions to Close Budget Gap
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada presented testimony before the New York State Joint Legislative Fiscal and Education Committee earlier this this week. He addressed head-on the structural budget constraints which sabotage Yonkers ability to sustain educational programs and the personnel required to deliver them. Dr. Quezada offered a four-point plan for sustainable recurring revenue to maintain outstanding academic outcomes for all students - and to close the persistent budget gap.

Three Lincoln High School Science Research students were among 550 young scientists from throughout the region who participated in the Westchester Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Jessica Abu’s Environmental poster board earned her a coveted 2nd place.

With enough credits to earn their high school diplomas, 36 Gorton High School students are off and running to college and career a semester early thanks to their participation in the FLIGHT program (Future Leaders Inspired and Getting a Head Start on Tomorrow).

Yonkers BOE Accepting Applications for Library Trustee
Rev. Steve Lopez, President of the Yonkers Board of Education, announced that the Board is accepting applications for two positions of Trustee for the Yonkers Public Library. Applications are due December 30.
